Wessex Water is resuming major work next month to help protect properties and the highway in Mark, Somerset, from flooding.
The water company is investing more than £2 million to upgrade the existing sewerage network through the village, which struggles to cope during times of heavy rainfall as it is served by a problematic old vacuum sewer system. Currently Wessex Water has to tanker sewage away to maintain services for customers.
A new sewer is being laid along The Causeway to convert part of the existing system and alleviate the flooding problems.
The work started in June 2015, and The Causeway was closed from 26 October 2015 to 3 March 2016 so the new gravity sewer could be constructed. Somerset County Council highways has now allowed the road to be closed once again so the work can be completed.
Project manager for the scheme Andy Roberts said the sewerage improvement work had taken much longer than anticipated due to difficult ground conditions. The company is now looking to work extended hours and increasing its workforce.
With the UK government demanding a 50% reduction in storm overflow spills by 2029, the era of reactive management is over. Speaking in the House of Commons on 21 July 2025, then environment secretary Steve Reed said, “This Government will cut water companies’ sewage pollution in half by the end of the decade.”
